There’s a particular flavor to the American West, a mix of grit and grandeur that continues to shape the nation’s imagination. From the enduring symbols of cowboy hats and silver spurs to the rugged freedom that they’ve come to represent, Western culture has carved a place deep in the American psyche. It’s both history and identity—a sense of unrefined possibility covered in rodeo dust. Nowhere is that legacy more alive than in Jackson, Wyoming, where traditions like antler gathering and festivals that celebrate the unique legacy of the West keep the enduring cowboy spirit alive.
ElkFest
Each year, Jackson Hole hosts ElkFest, a unique celebration of nature, community, and conservation. The event is centered around one of the region’s most well-known natural cycles: the annual shedding of elk antlers. As winter gives way to spring, thousands of elk migrate from the National Elk Refuge in Jackson back into the high country, leaving behind a bounty of naturally shed antlers. Local Boy Scouts, under the supervision of the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, gather these antlers—a longstanding tradition that connects youth to wildlife stewardship and outdoor ethics.
The highlight of ElkFest is the Jackson Hole Antler Auction, held on the Town Square, where the collected antlers are sold to bidders from around the world. A portion of the proceeds benefits the Scouts, while the majority goes towards habitat improvement on the refuge.
Over 8,000 pounds of antler are put up for auction every year, raising hundreds of thousands of dollars. Contrary to a common misconception, no elk are harmed in the process. These antlers are shed naturally and sustainably harvested.
Fittingly, the town square itself is framed by four iconic arches made entirely of elk antlers, a striking symbol of Jackson’s deep connection to its wild surroundings and its community spirit. The first arch was constructed in 1953 by the Jackson Hole Rotary Club, with three more being added over the next 13 years. Each arch weighs over 14,000 pounds and contains thousands of antlers. Today, the arches are an iconic piece of Jackson, serving as photo locations, gathering places, and the backdrop for events like the Jackson Hole Town Square Shootout.
This year’s ElkFest will be held on May 17th. A food court will be provided by Jackson Youth Baseball.
Old West Days
Coinciding with ElkFest is the Old West Days Festival, hosted by the Jackson Hole Chamber of Commerce. Running from May 16th through the 26th, this annual festival brings the town alive with events that honor the traditions, cultures, and history that define the American West.
The Mountain Man Rendezvous brings visitors back in time to the 19th-century fur trade era, with historical reenactors telling stories showcasing traditional crafts. You’ll find others facilitating competitions in areas like tomahawk throwing, archery, and use of the atlatl, a Native American spear-thrower. On Trader’s Row, visitors can barter in the shadow of the Tetons and bring home their own small piece of the Wild West.
Visitors to the festival will also enjoy a taste of Jackson’s cuisine. Local chefs and amateurs go head-to-head in the High Noon Chili Cook-Off, and attendees vote on a winner. Sample a wide variety of chilis, complemented by live music and craft brews.
Speaking of beer, aficionados will enjoy the Old West Brewfest, featuring a diverse selection of beers and ciders from regional breweries.
The Best of the West Parade showcases the community’s pride with floats, music, and real-life cowboys on horseback marching through downtown Jackson. The festival culminates with the Million Dollar Music Fest, a free concert that brings together music lovers for an evening of live performance.
The festival also signifies the beginning of rodeo season in Jackson, where visitors can witness iconic events like bull and bronc riding, tie-down roping, barrel racing, and steer roping. Visitors of all ages can watch old hands and new talent alike engage in this thrilling western tradition.
